BOOK☆WALKER is a comprehensive e-book store operated by the KADOKAWA Group that launched in 2010. In addition to books published by commercial publishers, BOOK☆WALKER began offering doujinshi created by individuals and circles in 2015. Today, it provides services across both sales and production, including the sale of more than 10,000 doujinshi titles and the provision of an electronic comic creation tool. Meanwhile, Taiwan BOOK☆WALKER, which launched in 2016, began expanding its handling of doujinshi in earnest in 2024 in response to the growing popularity of doujinshi in Taiwan in recent years.
At doujinshi events in Japan, the number of overseas fans attending has been increasing year by year, driving greater demand for multilingual doujinshi. At the same time, individual creators face various hurdles when expanding overseas, including the high cost of translation. To overcome this language barrier, Mantra, which develops and provides an automatic translation system dedicated to manga, has partnered with BOOK☆WALKER in Japan and Taiwan. Since spring 2025, the companies have been trialing a pioneering cross-border sales initiative in which Japanese-language manga doujinshi are sold on Taiwan BOOK☆WALKER, while Traditional Chinese manga doujinshi are sold on Japan’s BOOK☆WALKER. Purchased doujinshi can be read through a viewer with automatic translation, which displays natural translations that take context into account directly on the reading screen.
The number of eligible titles has now been expanded to approximately 340, and the lineup will continue to grow in stages. A campaign will also be held to commemorate the official launch.
In the highly passion-driven field of doujinshi, creating opportunities for works and readers to connect across countries and languages is a role that Dwango’s e-book business—whose vision is to “create a world where ‘loves’ connect”—believes it should fulfill. Starting with this initiative for manga doujinshi, the companies aim to further expand the scope of eligible works and supported languages, providing an environment where readers can enjoy books seamlessly.
